SUMMARY
 
Vietnam currently has 87 companies and more than 100 small private production facilities specializing in wood pellet manufacturing, with a combined annual capacity of approximately 5.2 - 5.5 million tons. This capacity has grown significantly over the past five years. Of the total production, 90–95% is exported, with only 5–7% serving the domestic market. While Vietnam does import wood pellets, the volumes are minimal.
 
Vietnam outlook and challenges
 
For the next 2-3 years, the outlook for Vietnam's wood pellet industry remains relatively optimistic due to several factors:
Expansion into the EU market following Russia's supply withdrawal.
Japan's preference for Vietnam’s competitively priced and sustainable wood pellets.
Increasing domestic use of biomass in industrial boilers.
 
However, challenges remain: 
Heavy export reliance on South Korea and Japan, which are vulnerable to market-specific demand shifts;
Limited FSC-certified forest area impacts competitiveness in high-standard markets;
Increasing competition from Russia, Malaysia, and Indonesia in South Korea market.
